Men’s Golf up to Fifth at Notre Dame

Cardinals enter final round three shots out of second place
LEADERBOARD
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Keegan McKinney led the Ball State men's golf team Monday with a 1-under par 69 as the Cardinals tied for the third-best round of the day at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic.
Ball State's second-round score of 284 was three shots better than its opening round. It moved the team one spot up the leaderboard into a tie for fifth with a two-day score of 571 (+11), just three shots out of second place.
UTEP (even) fired the low round of the day with a 278 to remain atop the 15-team leaderboard, while Illinois State (+8) and Notre Dame (+8) share second. Eastern Michigan (+9) is fourth with one round to play at Warren Golf Course.
McKinney's 69 was his low round of the season, while Timothy Wiseman posted his career-low round with a 70. Wiseman is leading the field in par-5 scoring for the week at 5 under.
The Cardinals also counted a 72 from Johnny Watts and a 73 (by both Michael VanDeventer and Michael Makris) in the second round.
Watts is the top Ball State player individually through two rounds in a tie for fourth at even par. VanDeventer is tied for seventh at 1 over. He held his round together Monday despite a 10 on his fifth hole of the day, bouncing back with birdies on four of his next seven holes.
Notre Dame's Blake Barens continues to hold the individual lead at 7 under, two shots clear of UTEP's Frederik Dreier.
The final round will be played Tuesday. Ball State will go off starting at 9:15 a.m., playing with Eastern Michigan and Santa Clara. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
