
Men?s Swim & Dive Narrowly Falls At Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Ball State men's swimming and diving team took on Mid-American Conference opponent Evansville Friday afternoon in its final road event of the regular season. The narrow matchup came down to the final two events, although the Cardinals ultimately fell 151.5-148.5 to the Purple Aces.
The first event win of the day came from sophomore Isaac Walling when he was first to touch the wall in the 1000 freestyle. Walling came in with a 10:00.92, which was then followed by JD Middleton's second place finish with a 10:04.07 final, which marked a new season-best for the junior.
Andrew Carlson branched off the momentum when he turned in an individual event win in the 200 freestyle right after with a 1:45.90 final. Carlson went on to earn a second individual event win when he marked a 4:50.35 in the 500 freestyle later in the meet.
The next top finish from the Ball State squad came from junior Tanner Barton, who earned a 1:55.26 mark in the 200 butterfly. Barton was trailed by fellow junior Jacob Eckert, who came in second with a 1:59.92 time.
It was then that junior Austin Green earned the first place spot in the 50 free, with a clocked 21.83 time. Green also helped the Cardinals close out the meet on a high note when he combined with Barton, Carlson and senior Cole Smith for a first place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:11.30 final.
In the diving well, freshmen Lane Sawyer and Gabe Dean combined to contribute 11 points for Ball State. It was in the one-meter diving event that Sawyer finished second overall with a score of 211.35, while Dean earned a 170.47 mark for fourth. Later on in three-meter diving action, Sawyer earned a third place finish with a score of 211.50, while Dean followed in fourth with a score of 202.50.
The Ball State men's swimming and diving team will round out the regular season with conference action when it hosts Miami on Feb. 13. The 2 p.m. event will host a special Senior Day recognition session in which Cole Smith will be honored.
