January 29, 2016 | Men's Swimming and Diving
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's swimming and diving program will hit the road for the final time in the regular season for a meet with Mid-American Conference opponent Evansville on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Wyttenbach Pool.
Most recently, the Cardinals team participated in the co-ed Butler Invitational Sunday afternoon and finished third of five men's teams in competition with 534.5 points.
Junior Austin Green marked the highest finish of the day for the Cardinals when he touched the wall second in the 50 freestyle in a 21.47 fashion. The time was a new season best for the Peru, Ind. native, and gave him momentum throughout his other races. Green went on to claim fourth in the 100 freestyle with a 47.25 finish, as well as fifth in both the 200 medley relay (1:38.08) with teammates Nate Slack, Zach Reichle and Jacob Eckert, and the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.53) with Logan Kisinger, Andrew Carlson and Cole Smith.
Junior Tanner Barton also stood out when he finished third of 17 in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.10, as well as fourth of 15 in the 100 butterfly with a 51.84 final. Barton also teamed up with Kisinger, Zach Toman and Cole Smith to solidify a third place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:36.40) to open the Invite. Barton then combined with JD Middleton, Reichle, and Banistre Lienhart to post a seventh place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:20.18) to round out the day's action.
When the Cardinals welcomed Evansville to the Lewellen Aquatic Center last season, Ball State soared in a significant 196-98 victory and it was one of the two wins of the season. Overall, the Cardinals hold a 3-2 advantage over the Aces since the 2010-11 season.
This weekend will mark the final home events of the season for the Evansville men's swimming and diving program, with the Friday afternoon action with the Cardinals, followed by welcoming Valparaiso for senior day on Saturday afternoon. In its only event since the semester break, the Aces swam at Saint Louis on Jan. 16 in which Cory Barnes and Miguel Marcano swept the top two spots in one-meter diving action. In the lanes Ethan O'Rourke stood out by earning second in the 200 medley relay (1:37.93), second in the 50 backstroke (25.02), and second in the 100 back (53.06). The Aces ultimately fell 205-76.
Evansville is currently 1-3 this season overall, with its lone victory coming against Eastern Illinois in a 188-99 final, although the Aces are 0-2 in MAC action.
Looking ahead, the Ball State men's swimming and diving team will round out team regular season action when it welcomes Mid-American Conference foe Miami to Lewellen Aquatic Center on Saturday, Feb. 13. The 2 p.m. meet will have a special Senior Day recognition session prior to the start of the meet to honor Cole Smith.
