WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team dropped its opening match of the 2016 season, 5-2, against No. 44 Purdue Saturday afternoon at Basham Courts.
"I didn't do a great job having us ready today," Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris said. "However, we definitely competed better the ladder half of the match and showed signs of how we can compete as a team. We are looking forward to getting back to work and also our first home match Friday the 29th against Butler."
In doubles action, the No. 3 twosome of Isabelle Dohanics and Audrey Berger fell first by a score of 6-3 to Purdue's doubles tandem, Claudia Escribens and Natalie Davila. With the doubles point on the line, Peyton Gollhofer paired up with Toni Ormond on court two to face the Boilermakers Andjela Djokovic and Marta Ruedas-Burgos. Gollhofer and Ormond dropped their match 6-3 to give Purdue the early 1-0 edge heading into singles play. At No. 1 doubles, the match between Bethany Moore and Carmen Blanco went unfinished but the score was tied 4-4.
Newcomer Carmen Blanco in her spring debut for the Cardinals dropped her first set to Deborah Suarez 6-4 but rallied back to win the next two sets (7-5, 1-0) for the victory over Purdue on the top court. Berger also lost her first set to Escribens on court five but took sets two and three for the 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 win.
Despite losing their singles matches, Ormond, Sbircea, Gollhofer and Rosalinda Calderone put up good fights in their respective positions, taking points from Purdue in each of their sets.
The Ball State women's tennis team will host Butler in its home opener Friday at 6 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. After Friday's match, the Cardinals remain home for six-straight competitions from Jan. 29-Feb. 19.
