Field Hockey Suffers 6-1 Loss At Villanova
September 04, 2015 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Ball State field hockey team (0-3) dropped a 6-1 final against Villanova (1-2) Friday afternoon. Freshman Michelle Shampton (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) scored the lone goal for the Cardinals, making it her first collegiate career goal.
“We had a game plan and when we executed it, we played really well, but we didn't step up as a team from the very beginning and so we just let Villanova dictate to us,” Ball State field hockey head coach Sally Northcroft said. “We had some good opportunities and I was excited to see Michelle Shampton score her first collegiate goal and to see that excitement and the thrill for her to do that. I think Bethany Han was a great emotional leader and really worked to try to make something happen for the team.”
Senior Bethany Han (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) assisted Shampton in addition to tallying three shots of her own throughout the 70 minutes. Junior Merinda Morley (University City, Mo./University City) notched three shots with two on goal, while Carley Shannon (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton), Bianca Velez (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam/Beach Premier) and Mikayla Mooney (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) also registered shots on the day.
Junior goalkeeper Jordan Dues (Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook) tallied 11 saves to Villanova's Erika Miller's five, giving Dues a 0.647 save percentage. The 11 saves marked a new single match high for Dues, while she faced 31 attempted shots overall.
The Wildcats first got on the board in just the 4th minute, and headed into halftime holding a comfortable 4-1 lead. Ball State drew a hefty 12 penalty strokes throughout the match to Villanova's 17.
“We have a little work to do and to turn around after this we need to recover and then reorganize ourselves to get ready to play LaSalle on Sunday,” Northcroft said. “We are still working on a few things and finding our character. I'm looking forward to seeing what the team can do and how they will pull themselves together as a team and decide on what kind of work ethic they can deliver. It was a tough one today, tough to see the team go down like that, but everything's a process and it's a journey for us so we'll definitely learn from this one.”
The Ball State field hockey team will take on LaSalle on Sunday, Sept. 6, followed by the home opener against Northwestern on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Tuesday's match will be held at 3 p.m. on the Ball State Turf Field at the Briner Sports Complex.
