MADISON, Wis. -- The Ball State men's golf team closed out the Badger Invitational where it began Tuesday's final round, in third place out of 12 teams.
Michael VanDeventer led the Cardinals on Tuesday with a 2-over par 74 in wet and windy conditions at Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Course. Ball State closed with a team score of 309 to finish with a 54-hole total of 894 (+30).
The team also counted a pair of 77's from James Blackwell and Tyler Pearson in the final round along with an 81 from Johnny Watts. The Cardinals got off to a tough start in the wind on the more difficult side of the course but steadied things on the back nine.
Kansas posted the low round of the day to move past overnight leader Miami University and win the tournament at 865 (+1), eight shots clear of the RedHawks (+9). Butler (+34) was fourth, and William & Mary (+35) rounded out the top 5.
VanDeventer and Blackwell finished at 221 (+5) for the three rounds to tie for 12th place. Michael Makris (+12) tied for 33rd, while Watts (+14) tied for 44th. Pearson and Tyler Ostrom, competing as an individual, both finished with a total of 236 (+20).
Miami's Patrick Flavin carded a third straight-under par round to finish as the top individual at 9 under par, while Wisconsin's Jordan Hahn was second at 5 under. They were the only two players to finish the tournament in red figures.
The Badger Invitational was the third of six events on Ball State's fall schedule. The Cardinals will return to action next week, competing Monday and Tuesday at the Firestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
