AKRON, Ohio -- Johnny Watts finished in a tie for ninth place to lead the Ball State men's golf team at the Firestone Invitational.
Watts closed with a round of 2-under par 70 as the tournament concluded Tuesday on the North Course at Firestone Country Club. The sophomore finished with a career-best 54-hole total of 213 (-3), but he was the only Ball State player among the top 50.
The Cardinals posted a final-round score of 303, also counting a 75 from James Blackwell and 79s from Michael Makris and Derek Kundenreich. The team recorded a 54-hole total of 893 (+29). Makris carded four birdies and an eagle in Tuesday's round but found too many big numbers, as well.
Maryland (-8) finished atop the team leaderboard, holding off tournament host Akron (-6) by two strokes. Old Dominion (Even) was third, followed by Georgetown (+3), Ohio (+3) and Xavier (+3) in a tie for fourth.
David Kocher of Maryland was the individual medalist at 9 under par, one shot clear of Toledo's Otto Black and Valparaiso's Peter Webb.
Ball State will return to action next week just down the road in Carmel, playing Monday and Tuesday at the Crooked Stick Invitational.
