SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The scores were good at this week's Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. They were so good the Ball State men's golf team couldn't make a move despite a pair of under-par rounds Tuesday.
James Blackwell fired a 68 (-3) and Michael VanDeventer carded a 70 (-1), both career bests, but the Cardinals moved up just one spot as a team to finish in a tie for 10th.
Ball State also counted a 73 from Johnny Watts and a 78 from Timothy Wiseman in Tuesday's round. The Cardinals' team score of 289 gave them a 54-hole total of 876 (+24) at Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course.
Notre Dame and Saint Mary's finished as co-champions. Saint Mary's topped the Irish by one shot in Tuesday's round to join them at 850 (-2) for the tournament. Wofford (+7) was third, followed by Utah State (+9) and Loyola (Md.) (+15).
Jonathan De Los Reyes of Saint Mary's was the individual medalist with a total of 207 (-6). Fourteen players finished at even par or better.
VanDeventer was Ball State's top finisher in a tie for 17th at 215 (+2) after three straight steady rounds. Blackwell's 68, which featured six birdies, moved him 17 spots up the leaderboard to join VanDeventer in the top 20 with a tie for 19th.
Watts tied for 37th at 222, while Tyler Pearson (227) and Wiseman (229) rounded out the Ball State lineup.
The Cardinals will return to action next week, competing Sept. 27-29 at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis.
