Watts Finishes Top 20 at Northern Intercollegiate

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- Johnny Watts finished in a tie for 18th place to lead the Ball State men's golf team at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate.
The tournament wrapped up Sunday at Rich Harvest Farms. The Cardinals placed 14th as a team, finishing with a 54-hole total of 925 (+61).
Preseason No. 1 Illinois ran away from the field, posting a score of 857 (-7) to finish 27 shots clear of second-place Purdue. Preseason No. 7 UCLA finished third.
Houston's Vincent Martino was the individual medalist at 3 under par, while Illinois players Dylan Meyer, Thomas Detry and Charlie Danielson occupied the next three spots on the leaderboard.
James Blackwell posted Ball State's best round Sunday with a 73 to move up into a tie for 38th as the team's second-best finisher. The Cardinals posted a final-round score of 311 that also included a 77 from Watts, an 80 from Keegan McKinney and an 81 from Derek Kundenreich.
Ball State will return to action Sept. 21-22 at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic at Warren Golf Club in South Bend, Ind.
