Baseball Loses to CMU Saturday;Host Chippewas Sunday

The Mid-American Conference West Division leading Central Michigan Chippewas tallied a 21-2 victory over Ball State's baseball team Saturday afternoon.
The third game of the series will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ball Diamond in the First Merchants Ballpark Complex. Admission to all Ball State games is free for all fans.
The Cardinals best chance to get on the board early came in the first inning. Alex Maloney led off the first with a single and Ryan Spaulding moved him to third with a double that bounced over the right center field fence. On a wild pitch, Maloney was put out at the plate but Spaulding advanced to third. With two outs Jarett Rindfleisch was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners, but Elbert Devarie grounded out to end the inning.
Central Michigan started the game's scoring with one run in the top of the second, before the Chippewas added five more in the third to take a 6-0 lead after two and a half innings. CMU continued to add on to its lead with a combined three runs in the fifth and sixth to increase its lead to 9-0.
After a 17-minute rain delay in the eighth inning, the game resumed for eight minutes before a second delay because of lightning ensued for 30 minutes.
After the game resumed in the CMU seven-run eighth inning, the Chippewas led 16-0.
Spaulding provided a small spark for the Cardinals in the eighth inning with his third home run of the season, a solo shot down the left field line, but Central Michigan added five more in the ninth to claim the victory. Matt Eppers added an RBI single in the ninth to plate the Cardinals second run of the day.
Spaulding was 2-for-5 on the day, while Devarie managed two hits in four at-bats.
Devin Wilburn started on the mound for the Cardinals and suffered the loss to fall to 4-2 on the season. Wilburn pitched 3.2 innings, allowing six earned runs and striking out three batters.
