Baseball Loses to CMU; Hosts Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Mid-American Conference West Division leading Central Michigan Chippewas dealt Ball State's baseball team an 18-7 loss Friday at Ball Diamond in the First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
With the loss, the Cardinals fell to 27-20 overall and evened their league record at 11-11. Central Michigan improved to 31-18 and 16-6 in conference play. The two teams will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday in Muncie, Ind., and complete the series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Ball Diamond.
After falling behind 2-0 through two and a half innings, Ball State scored its first run of the game in the bottom half of the second to pull within 2-1. Scott Tyler led off the inning with a single and scored on an Alex Call single to right field.
With the score still at 2-1, Central Michigan had runners on the corners with one out and a fly out to Elbert Devarie in left sent the CMU runner to the plate, but Devarie gunned him down to keep the one-run margin intact.
The Chippewas added two more in the sixth before Devarie's sliding catch in short left center stalled the rally and a fly to Matt Eppers in center field ended the top of the sixth with CMU holding a 4-1 lead.
Ball State loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on three walks. With one out, Tyler roped a double to left field and cleared the bases as the Cardinals tied the game at 4-4.
The Chippewas answered right back with three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead back by a 7-4 margin. And then, Central Michigan added five more in the eighth and sixth in the ninth to claim the victory.
B.J. Butler suffered the loss in the contest to fall to 4-5 on the season, while Tyler enjoyed the best day at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance with three runs-batted-in.
