Ball State's baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Toledo in a Sunday double header after claiming the Friday win in the series opener. The Cardinals suffered a 6-1 loss in the first game and an 8-3 defeat in Sunday's second contest.
After the weekend, the Cardinals own a 25-17 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the Mid-American conference. Ball State and Toledo are now tied for second in the MAC West Division.
In game one, Ball State suffered a 6-1 defeat after the Rockets tallied three in the fourth and three in the sixth.
The Cardinals could muster only one run and it came in the bottom of the ninth when Alex Call and Ryan Spaulding posted back-to-back singles with one out. The pair advanced to second and third and Call scored on a Jarett Rindfleisch sacrifice fly to center field.
Trevor Henderson started on the mound for Ball State and lasted 5.2 innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out 10 of the 26 batters he faced. David Current and Devin Wilburn finished out the game with Wilburn pitching the final 3.1 frames, allowing no runs and striking out three.
Call was 1-for-4 with one run scored in the game, while Spaulding, Elbert Devarie, Sean Kennedy and Brandon Estep each had one hit in the contest. Estep's double was the Cardinals' only extra base hit in the contest.
In the second game, Ball State suffered an 8-3 loss after the Rockets managed three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to break open a game that was tied 3-3 through six innings.
B.J. Butler started the game and pitched six innings before suffering the loss to fall to 3-4 on the season. Butler allowed five earned runs, while striking out three.
Toledo scored first with one run in the first, but Ball State quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the second. Rindfleisch doubled to left field and advanced to third on a Estep single. Alex Maloney's sacrifice fly to right field scored Rindfleisch to tie the game.
The Rockets took a 3-1 lead with two scores in the top of the sixth, but Ball State answered right back with two runs of their own to tie the game at 3-3. Kennedy opened the inning with a single and Caleb Stayton followed with a single to advance Kennedy to third. Rindfleisch singled to score Kennedy and two batters later Maloney singled through the left side of the infield to score Stayton and tie the contest.
Toledo then added five runs in the next two innings to claim the victory and move into a tie for second in the MAC West with the Cardinals.
Stayton was 3-for-4 in the contest with one run scored, while Rindfleisch was 3-for-4 with one run batted in and one run scored. Maloney was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
