NAPLES, Fla. -- LSU, the nation's 13th-ranked team, pulled ahead during the opening nine holes Monday and went on to win the second-annual Talis Park Challenge hosted by the Ball State men's golf team.
The Tigers matched the low round of the tournament with an 8-under par 276 at Talis Park Golf Club. They came from two shots back to win by four with a 54-hole total of 838 (-14).
No. 4 Vanderbilt, the defending champion, held the overnight lead but finished runner-up at 842 (-10). Wichita state (-2), which held the final-round lead early, was the only other team to finish under par.
Ball State ended the last round where it started, in 13th place. The Cardinals posted a three-round score of 884 (+32). They counted a 71 from McCormick Clouser, a 73 from Michael VanDeventer, a 74 from Johnny Watts and a 79 from Zach Yinger on the way to a final-round 297.
VanDeventer birdied three of his first four holes Monday to move into the top 10 before falling back. He was Ball State's top finisher in a tie for 20th at 215 (+2). Clouser tied for 28th at 217 (+4).
Toledo's Chris Selfridge surged to the top with a final-round 67 to win with a score of 207 (-6). He finished one shot clear of a trio of players -- Korey Ward of Xavier, Hunter Stewart of Vanderbilt and Adria Arnaus of Texas A&M. Ward matched the low individual round of the tournament with a 66 Monday.
Rounding out the Ball State lineup, Watts finished at 224, Michael Makris at 233 and Yinger at 236. Derek Kundenreich, competing as an individual, finished at 225 after a final-round 73.
The Talis Park Challenge was the first stroke-play event of the spring for Ball State and its first event of any kind since the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play in the second week of February.
The Cardinals will return to action April 3-5 with the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
