March 10, 2015 | Men's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Sean Sellers of the Ball State men's basketball team was announced Tuesday as the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year as selected by the league's media members.
Sellers, who was named to the league's all-freshman team a day earlier, is the MAC's top scorer among rookies at 12.0 points per game. He knocked down 43.7 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc this season as one of the nation's best freshman long-range shooters.
“I am proud of Sean for having a great freshman year,” Ball State coach James Whitford said. “We relied on him very heavily, and he consistently delivered. He has an incredibly bright future. In addition to being talented, he has high character and a great work ethic. I am confident he will have a great career at Ball State.”
The Greensburg, Ind., product set a Ball State freshman record with 66 3-pointers and finished the season fifth on the Cardinals' all-time rookie scoring list with 359 points. His 26 points in the season opener at nationally ranked Utah were the fifth-most by a BSU rookie in any game.
Sellers started 29 of Ball State's 30 games and led the team in minutes played. He held a major role for young Cardinals team that saw nearly 70 percent of its scoring come from the freshman and sophomore classes.
Ball State's season wrapped up Monday night with a first-round loss at Bowling Green in the MAC Tournament, but the Cardinals will lose only one senior, Matt Kamieniecki, off the roster next year.
Sellers is now one of seven players in Ball State history to be named the league's top freshman, including teammate Zavier Turner a season ago.
