November 09, 2015 | Men's Golf
LAHAINA, Hawaii -- Johnny Watts of the Ball State men's golf team posted his third straight under-par round Sunday en route to a third-place finish at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
Watts carded a 1-under round of 70 to finish with a career-low 54-hole total of 207 (-6) on the Royal Ka'anapali Course at Ka'anapali Golf Club.
The sophomore defeated nine of the 10 top-100 players in the field and finished just two shots back of Georgia's Zach Healy for individual medalist honors. Brad Dalke of Oklahoma was second.
Ball State held onto its 12th-place spot as a team. The Cardinals closed with a round of 292 to finish with a three-day total of 881 (+29). In addition to Watts' 70, the team also counted a 73 from Michael Makris, a 74 from Timothy Wiseman and a 75 from Michael VanDeventer in Sunday's final round.
Oklahoma, the nation's 13th-ranked team, led wire-to-wire and polished off a 12-stroke victory with a score of 837 (-15). No. 12 Georgia (-3) finished second as the only other team in red figures, while NC State (+10) was third. The 19-team tournament included six of the top 40 teams in the country.
VanDeventer and Wiseman were the next Cardinals on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 63rd with 54-hole scores of 226 (+13). Makris finished at 230, while James Blackwell finished at 235.
Watts led the field with 15 birdies for the week and was the only player in the tournament to post red figures in all three rounds. He entered the event with three top-20 finishes and one top-10 result already this season, but his third-place finish this week marks his best showing since he won the Mid-American Conference Championships last spring.
The Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic was the last of six team events on Ball State's fall schedule. The Cardinals will return to action Feb. 8-9, hosting the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play at Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
