Men?s Golf Finishes Eighth at Crooked Stick

CARMEL, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team finished out the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate in eighth place Tuesday. The Cardinals closed with a final-round 311 in windy, challenging conditions to post a 54-hole total of 918 (+54).
Top-ranked Illinois finished atop the 12-team field at 866 (+2), winning by 19 strokes. A trio of top-30 teams in the national rankings occupied the next three spots -- Purdue (+21) in second, Duke (+30) in third and Kentucky (+33) in fourth.
Ball State finished the tournament 16 shots ahead of Indiana and 17 ahead of Notre Dame.
Michael VanDeventer led the Cardinals with a round of 75 on a final day when the average score for the field was 79.61. Ball State also counted 78's from Johnny Watts and James Blackwell and an 80 from Michael Makris in the final round.
Watts finished as Ball State's top player on the leaderboard in a tie for 14th with a three-round total of 225 (+9), while VanDeventer climbed nine spots Tuesday into a tie for 20th at 229 (+13). Watts' top-20 finish was his second in a row and third this fall.
Blackwell (232) tied for 30th, while Makris (234) tied for 37th, and Timothy Wiseman (245) tied for 58th. Albert Jennings (239), competing as an individual, tied for 47th.
Charlie Danielson of Illinois came from eight shots back entering the final round to claim individual medalist honors at 212 (-4). He finished three strokes ahead of Kentucky's Tyler McDaniel, the 36-hole leader.
The Crooked Stick Intercollegiate was the fifth event in five weeks for Ball State. The Cardinals will now have some time off before their final event of the fall season, the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic, which will be contested Nov. 6-8 in Lahaina, Hawaii.
