Second-Half Surge Lifts Central Michigan Past Field Hockey
October 30, 2015 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. – Senior Natalie Jardell (Granville, Ohio/Granville) put the Ball State field hockey team on the board first, but Central Michigan responded with four unanswered goals, including three in the second half, to hand the Cardinals a 4-1 setback at BSU Turf Field in the Briner Sports Complex Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals (2-15, 0-5 Mid-American Conference) entered the game needing a victory over the Chippewas (2-15, 2-4 MAC) to remain in contention for the sixth in final spot in next week's MAC Tournament.
With that on her mind, Jardell gave Ball State an early lift in the eighth minute by finding the back of the net off a penalty corner for her third goal of the season. Junior Lexi Kavanaugh (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon Verona Sherrill) took the penalty corner for the Cardinals, passing it to classmate Bryce Barnes (Fredericksburg, Va./Mountain View) who stopped the ball to set up Jardell's goal which sailed past the CMU keeper's shoulder.
Ball State maintained the one-goal advantage until the 17th minute, when CMU's Alex Gonda deposited a rebound shot into the back of the cage. Following the CMU goal, which tied the score at 1-1, the Cardinals would attempt three more shots in the first half, but could not connect.
The score remained tied until early in the second half, when a 42nd-minute goal by Central Michigan's Maude Stalars gave the guests a 2-1 lead. CMU's Elaine Materise followed with goals in the 50th and 63rd minutes to cap the scoring, at 4-1, and officially eliminate the Cardinals from MAC Tournament contention.
Overall, Ball State finished the contest with 10 total shots, eight of which reached net. Central Michigan tallied eight total shots, six of which found the net. The Cardinals managed a 7-to-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Ball State field hockey team closes its 2015 season Sunday, when it hosts league co-leader Kent State for a noon start at the BSU Turf Field at the Briner Sports Complex. Prior to the game, the Cardinals will honor its six-member senior class in an on-field ceremony.
