Strong Second-Half Helps Kent State Top Field Hockey 6-1
November 01, 2015 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. – After the Golden Flashes opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, senior Bethany Han (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) was able to quickly even the field just two minutes later by scoring her third goal of the season, but Kent State (9-8, 5-1 MAC) responded with five unanswered goals to hand the Cardinals a 6-1 loss at the Briner Sports Complex Sunday afternoon in the final game of the season.
The Cardinals (2-16, 0-6 Mid-American Conference) held a pregame Senior Day ceremony to honor Han, Cameron Daniels (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox), Shelby Henley (Novi, Mich./Novi), Natalie Jardell (Granville, Ohio/Granville), Jenna Rosenberry (Manheim, Pa./Elizabethtown Area), and Bianca Velez (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellum/Beach Premiere) to thank them for their commitment to the field hockey program.
After the Golden Flashes opened scoring with a tipped in shot from the top of the circle, Han helped tie up Ball State just two minutes later in the 24th minute by finding the back of the net when she tucked in a narrow shot in the low right corner, from the baseline of the field.
Shortly after halftime, Kent State went on a scoring spree starting in the 36th minute, beginning with leading scorer Madison Thompson punching in her own rebound shot to seal the victory, followed by the Golden Flashes marking three goals in four minutes. Susanne Felder then rounded out the scoring in the 63rd minute off one of Kent State's 14 penalty corner opportunities.
The Cardinals would attempt just four shots in the 70 minute MAC matchup, but only Han, Velez and Mikayla Mooney (St. Louis, Mo. Whitfield School) could land a combined three on net. Kent State tallied 29 total shots, 21 of which found the net. The Golden Flashes also held a hefty 14-to-1 advantage in penalty corners.
With the loss, the Ball State field hockey team ends the 2015 season with a 2-16 overall record, as well as an 0-6 Mid-American Conference record.
