Morley Stretches Scoring Streak Against Ohio
October 17, 2015 | Field Hockey
ATHENS, Ohio – The Ball State (2-13, 0-3 MAC) field hockey team continued Mid-American Conference play on Friday evening against Ohio (7-6, 2-1 MAC) and fell to the Bobcats 4-1 despite redshirt sophomore Merinda Morley (University City, Mo./University City) notching a goal for the second game in a row, making it her fourth of the season.
The Cardinals and the Bobcats remained scoreless through just the first 10 minutes, until Ohio's leading scorer Maria Russell pushed in a shot from right out front of the net. Russell was assisted by major contributor Adele Sammons, who earned two goals and two assists on the day. Sammons second assist came in the 16th minute when she lined up a shot for Clarissa Leickly to pocket a penalty corner opportunity.
Shortly thereafter, Morley responded for the Cardinals when she was ready to pop in the rebound shot from a deflection on a Ball State penalty corner attempt. Attempts at the top of the circle have been crucial, as Morley's fourth goal of the season was her third to come off of the penalty corner advantage.
Ohio's Sammons then closed out the scoring with two goals in the 61st and 68th minutes to finalize the score at 4-1 in favor of the Bobcats.
Back in net, junior goalkeeper Jordan Dues (Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook) stretched her starting streak, and made her 15th start of the season and recorded three saves when faced with 14 attempted shots.
Pressuring Dues was the Ohio offense, which tallied seven shots on goal from the 14 attempted, compared to the Cardinals six attempted shots, with two landing on net. Senior Natalie Jardell (Granville, Ohio/Granville) notched the second Ball State shot on goal.
Penalty corner opportunities were sparse throughout the 70 minute conference matchup, as Ball State only benefitted from three, while Ohio drew eight.
Up next, the Ball State field hockey team will round out the regular season in a three-game home stretch, in which they will face Missouri State, Central Michigan and Kent State in MAC competition.
