SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Ball State men's golfer McCormick Clouser closed with a 2-under par round of 70 to climb into the top five Sunday at the Northern Intercollegiate.
The Cardinals finished eighth as a team with a three-round total of 905 (+41) after posting a final-round score of 300 at Rich Harvest Farms.
Virginia came from six shots back on the final day to win by three with a 54-hole total of 879 (+15). Winthrop, which led after each of the first two rounds, finished second. Ohio State, Purdue and Houston rounded out the top five.
Clouser made five birdies and three bogeys Sunday as he moved up five spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for fourth at 2 over par. The fourth-place finish was the best of his collegiate career, while his 218 total was two off his career best.
He ended up six shots back of individual medalist Zach Seabolt from Winthrop, who finished at 4 under. Seabolt won by three shots over Houston's Vincent Martino.
In addition to Clouser's 70, Ball State also counted a 74 from Zach Yinger, a 75 from James Blackwell and an 81 from Michael Makris in Sunday's round.
Yinger finished in a tie for 18th place with a three-round total of 224 (+8). It marked his best career finish and best career 54-hole score outside of Ball State's home tournament.
Blackwell, who posted a 75 for the second straight day, tied for 32nd at 229 (+13).
Hosted by Northern Illinois, the Northern Intercollegiate featured a strong field with 10 teams that finished last season ranked among the top 100 and five that were among the top 50.
Ball State will return to action Sept. 20-21 not far from home at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville. Indiana University is the host school for that event.
