ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team closed out Indiana's Wolf Run Intercollegiate in 14th place Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Johnny Watts posted his third straight round of 77 to move up 10 spots at the challenging Wolf Run Golf Club. Watts finished in a tie for 34th with a 54-hole total of 231.
Illinois, which has made seven straight NCAA Finals appearances, won the tournament by 30 shots with a three-round total of 859 (+7). Florida was second at 889, followed by Houston in third at 899.
Illinois also had the individual medalist in Brian Campbell (-4) and the runner-up in Charlie Danielson (-1). They were the only players in the field to finish in red figures.
The teams started the day by finishing off round two, which was suspended because of storms Saturday evening. Ball State recorded a team score of 314 in that second round and then posted a 317 in the third and final round.
In addition to the 77 from Watts, Ball State also counted a 77 from Zach Yinger, a 78 from McCormick Clouser and an 85 from James Blackwell on Sunday.
The Cardinals will be back in action Sept. 28-30 with the Fighting Irish Golf Classic. The tournament will be contested on two courses -- Warren Golf Club in South Bend, Ind., and Lost Dunes Golf Club in Bridgman, Mich.
