September 28, 2014 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State (3-6) field hockey team recorded a shootout loss against Saint Louis (2-8) Sunday afternoon, after dropping a three goal lead. The Billikens scored with ten minutes remaining to tie up the match and ultimately win in the shootout.
The Cardinals dominated the first half and went up early with a goal from senior Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia/BC Cyclones/Futures) off the rebound of a penalty corner, followed by first career goals from freshmen Abbey Main (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and Carley Shannon (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton).
Senior Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes/Beach Premier/Icoyo) was also aggressive offensively registering an outstanding nine shots with five on goal for the day. The Cardinals recorded a total of 16 shots on goal to the Billikens' 11.
“We need to be consistent and we have shown that we can have highlights of good stuff but we have also shown that we can have major mishaps,” Ball State field hockey head coach Beth Maddox said. “I think consistence is the element that we're missing at the moment, and the inconsistencies with their play is what is causing problems.”
Ball State had the 12-5 advantage over Saint Louis in penalty corners, yet the Billikens were still able to score two of their goals off of penalty strokes. Freshman Kristin Collins lifted Saint Louis to tie the game with ten minutes to go.
After two ineffective overtime periods, Ball State elected Shannon, Teach and Mikayla Mooney (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield) in the shootout, who were successful at finding the back of the net, and Bryce Barnes (Fredericksburg, Va./Mountain View), Widrick and Teach again who were not.
Junior goalkeeper Shelby Henley (Novi, Mich./Novi) stopped three of the six shots forced by Saint Louis and ultimately let in a penalty shot after colliding with the Billikens Lisa Smith.
“We have Iowa this weekend and they are an excellent team and I have no doubt that if we play like this is will be a really tough day for us.” Maddox went on. “In the first three games we worked hard for the entire game and we worked together. We've shown that we cannot do that for 70 minutes and that's the issue at hand so we need to figure out a way to become consistent for the entire game.”
The Ball State field hockey team will be back in action Friday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Iowa for an 8 p.m. game.
