MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State (3-5) field hockey team recorded a 2-0 loss against Central Michigan (2-8) Saturday afternoon at the Ball State Turf Field in the Briner Sports Complex. In the opening Mid-American Conference game, the Cardinals registered 11 shots on goal with none getting past the Chippewas' senior Sadie Reynolds.
“I think we should have been a bit feistier and a little bit more relentless in our attack circle and that would have made the big difference in the game today for sure,” Ball State field hockey head coach Beth Maddox said. “I would like us to be smart with the ball. I think that we were aggressive but I think that we were careless and that needs to be better.”
Central Michigan's Kaysie Gregory secured the game after scoring early in the third minute off of a rebound of the penalty corner. She then closed out the scoring just six minutes later with her second goal of the game.
The Cardinals pressured the Chippewas with 15 attempted shots to Central Michigan's six. Senior Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes/Beach Premier/Icoyo) led the team with four, followed by junior Bethany Han (Lititz, Pa/Warwick) and sophomore Merinda Morley (University City, Mo./University City) each registering three shots a piece. Despite having the advantage of eight penalty corners to the oppositions three, Ball State was unable to capitalize offensively.
“We were waiting today. I think everyone thought someone else was going to step up and finish and because of that no one did,” Maddox went on. “I think we made things really easy for them offensively, and I don't think we really challenged them.”
The Ball State field hockey team is back in action at home tomorrow, when they take on Saint Louis at 1:00 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex.
