Men's Tennis Concludes Day One Of Ball State Invite

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team completed day one of the 36th annual Ball State Fall Invitational Friday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
In the Flight A singles bracket, sophomore Lucas Andersen advanced to the quarterfinals after taking down IPFW's Daniel Cardenas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Ray Leonard suffered a straight set loss in the same flight while classmate Patrick Elliott won in three sets over Karl-Erik Wangensten-Oye of IPFW. Newcomer Jan Jirus had to withdraw due to an injury. In the same flight sophomore Patrick Downs fell to Andres Cobos of IPFW but took a match from Simon Jayaram of Dayton in the consolation round in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
In Flight B singles, Matt Helm earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Colin Bernier of Dayton before losing in the next round to Gleb sklyr of Marquette. Newcomer Collin Rigney defeated Jonathon Rae of IPFW, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 and will play Jose Nader Calero Saturday in the semifinals.
In doubles action, Leonard and Rigney took down Andre Romanello and Sklyr of Marquette by a score of 8-6. Jirus and Patrick O'Connor paired up in doubles action but would suffer a 9-8 (7) loss to Austin Aten and Luke Hubert, 9-8 (7).
