SL TV: A Double Knot (The Edon Twins)

For Ball State's Caitlynn Edon and Courtney Edon, life extends past the lanes of any track or cross country course. The two have been running together since their freshman year of high school at New Palestine (Ind.) High School.
“I never felt pressure in the Edon name or that Caitlynn and I had to finish 1-2,” Courtney said.
While being recruited in both cross country and track by several universities, the set of twins were adamant about being a package deal.
“If they didn't want both of us, we didn't even consider it,” Caitlynn said.
Through all the years of running the Edon twins have tied a unique relationship unlike any other.
“It is a one-of-a-kind thing,” Courtney said. “You have your best friend, but there is things that some people can't share with their best friends. Since we have grown up together forever there really is nothing you can't share with each other.”
The duo's relationship was immediately felt at Ball State too.
“They started the steeple chase race and we felt as though Caitlynn could be a top five finisher,” said Ball State head coach Randy Heisler. “They reached the first barrier with Courtney leading the race.
“She catches her trail-leg toe while going over the barrier, falls on the track and injures herself. Caitlynn then comes over the top of the barrier, sees her sister laying on the track and stops. For Caitlynn to stop in the middle of the race proves there is a real connection there.”
This season, the sisters own Ball State's top ties in both 5K and 6K races. Courtney tops the team with times of 18:17.63 and 23:10.26, respectively. Caitlynn follows with times of 18:30.70 and 23:51.73.
Not only have the Edon twins excelled as Ball State's top two distance runners, they have also excelled within their major -- both as nursing students, maintaining a 3.79-plus grade-point average.
“They are my role models,” said teammate Ericka Rinehart. “I just look up to them in academics, athletics and just the people they are also.”
“I don't think it is an accident they are both going to be nurses,” Heisler said. “The calling there, that's just the kind of people they are.”
The twins will graduate in May after finishing clinical work. Their immediate plan is to travel to Europe, before finding jobs hopefully within the same unit to establish their professional careers.
The Cardinals will host the Ball State Invitational at the Elks Country Club near Muncie Oct. 16. The Mid-American Conference Championship is slated for Nov. 1 in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
