ESTERO, Fla. -- Ball State's McCormick Clouser closed the FGCU Classic with a 1-under par round of 71 on Tuesday to move into a tie for fourth on the final leaderboard.
Clouser finished with a three-round total of 217 (+1), three strokes behind individual medalist AJ Crouch of Florida, in the final fall event for the Ball State men's golf team. Teammates Hank Lebioda and Josh Lee of Florida State edged Clouser by one shot for second place.
The No. 1-ranked Seminoles finished atop the team leaderboard at Old Corkscrew Golf Club with a total of 867 (+3), 13 strokes clear of second-place Florida. It was the second straight tournament Ball State competed against a team ranked No. 1 in the country.
Ball State fired a final-round 306 to conclude the day right where it started, in ninth place. The Cardinals finished with a 54-hole score of 920.
Clouser was under par for the second consecutive round on the way to his third top-five finish during the fall. In addition to his 71, Ball State also counted a 75 from James Blackwell, a 78 from Michael VanDeventer and an 82 from Johnny Watts.
Blackwell was the second Ball State player on the final leaderboard in a tie for 39th at 234, while Watts tied for 45th at 236.
Ball State is now off until the start of its spring season when the Cardinals will be back in Florida to host the Mid-American Match Play. The annual event is scheduled for Feb. 9-10 at Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
