October 25, 2014 | Field Hockey
KENT, Ohio – The Ball State (5-10, 1-4 MAC) field hockey team fell 6-1 to Mid-American Conference opponent Kent State (7-8, 4-0 MAC) Saturday afternoon. Junior Bethany Han (Lititz, Pa/Warwick) scored the lone goal for the Cardinals with help from sophomore Mikayla Mooney (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School).
MAC leader Kent State was aggressive offensively with 32 recorded shots and 17 on net. Scoring started early in the match due to an unassisted goal from the Golden Flash's Madison Thompson just 29 seconds into the match.
Han's goal was her fifth of the season, second highest for the Cardinals, behind sophomore Lexi Kavanaugh (Serrill, N.Y./Vernon Verona Sherrill) with six. Seniors Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes/Beach Premier/Icoyo) and Bianca Velez (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam/Beach Premier) also tallied shots on goal for the day.
"Today was frustrating. We worked hard in the first half and failed to do so in the second half," Ball State field hockey head coach Beth Maddox said. "Consistency was an issue for us."
Junior goalkeeper Shelby Henley (Novi, Mich./Novi) tallied 11 saves to Kent State's Andrea Rinehart's two, giving Henley a 0.647 save percentage facing 17 shots on net.
In addition to shots on goal, Kent State dominated offensively with 14 penalty corners with Hannah Faulkner tallying four goals. Ball State drew three penalty strokes throughout the match.
"Our seniors worked hard and we want to make sure they end their careers with a win against Miami," Coach Maddox went on.
The Ball State field hockey team will be back at home Saturday, Nov. 1, when they take on MAC foe Miami at 1 p.m. on the Ball State Turf Field at the Briner Sports Complex. The match will round out regular season play for the Cardinals and feature special senior day recognition.
