Tharp Named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State men's swimmer Drew Tharp was named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 6-12. This is the first time in his career Tharp has been given the honor.
Tharp earned two individual event wins in a tri-meet against IUPUI and Xavier on Friday, Jan. 10. The Evansville, Ind., native swept the butterfly events posting times of 51.52 in the 100 butterfly and 1:54.19 in the 200 butterfly. The senior was also a member of the 200 medley relay that turned in a fourth place finish off a 1:39.69 time.
Tharp ended the fall semester with a 4.0 GPA for a cumulative GPA of 3.83. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biology.
The Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to one male and one female student-athlete in the league based on athletic performance for the week of competition and overall academic achievement. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Tharp is the third Cardinal to earn this distinction in 2013-14. Quarterback Keith Wenning and women's golfer Jenna Hague also earned Scholar Athlete of the Week honors.
