Baseball Loses Extra Inning Game at Western Michigan

Ball State's baseball team suffered a 12-11 loss in 11 innings in a Mid-American Conference game at Western Michigan Friday.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 12-14 overall and 2-5 in the MAC, while WMU improved to 11-17 overall and 5-2 in league play.
The Cardinals scored first and took a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning before Western Michigan tallied eight runs in the bottom half of the fourth.
Ball State scored its run on a Wes Winkle double, followed by a Blake Beemer single and Sean Godfrey knocked in Winkle when reaching on a fielder's choice.
Ball State responded with nine runs in the top half of the sixth to take a 10-9 lead after five and a half frames.
The Cardinals managed its big inning on eight hits, including a Cody Campbell RBI double. Billy Wellman knocked in two runs in the inning with a single, while Kevin Schlotter, Winkle, Godfrey and T.J. Weir each knocked in a run apiece.
Western Michigan responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth and the Cardinals led 10-9 after six innings.
In the eighth, Ball State scored one run, while allowing the Broncos two runs and the score was knotted at 11-11 through eight. The Cardinals scored on a Godfrey RBI single that scored Winkle, who opened up the inning with a base hit.
Western Michigan held the Cardinals scoreless in their final three at-bats before scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 11th on a single and a pair of bunts.
Weir pitched the final three innings, allowing zero earned runs and striking out two batters, but suffered the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season.
Godfrey led the Cardinals with a 4-for-6 performance from the plate and added three runs-batted-in and scored twice. Campbell and Winkle added three hits apiece, while Wellman was 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.
The Cardinals will face Western Michigan Saturday and Sunday in 1 p.m. games to complete the three-game series.
