Ball State's baseball team tallied a 5-2 win in a Mid-American Conference game at Western Michigan to even the series at 1-1 with the finale set for Sunday.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 13-14 overall and 3-5 in the MAC, while Western Michigan falls to 11-17 overall and 5-3 in league games.

Scott Baker improved to 7-0 on the season with the victory after pitching a complete game, allowing only two earned runs, eight hits and striking out two. Baker entered the game ranked third in the nation with six wins.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 in the first inning and added a fourth run in the second.

Wes Winkle opened the game with a double and Blake Beemer managed a single to score Winkle. Cody Campbell singled to score Beemer, followed by a Billy Wellman single that plated Sean Godfrey, who had reached on a walk. Elbert Devarie, who had reached first on a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Winkle in the second inning and scored on a wild pitch to put the Cardinals ahead 4-0.

Western Michigan managed one run in the fourth and one in the fifth, but Ball State answered with a run in the seventh to make the score 5-2.

In the seventh, Beemer walked and with two outs, advanced to third on a passed ball. Wellman singled through the left side and Beemer scored to give the Cardinals the final margin of victory.

Beemer managed a 2-for-3 performance from the plate with one RBI and two runs scored. Wellman was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the win.

With the victory, Ball State evened the Western Michigan series at 1-1 with the finale set for Sunday in Kalamazoo, Mich.
