KENT, Ohio -- The Ball State soccer team suffered its first Mid-American Conference loss Friday afternoon with a 2-0 defeat at Kent State.
The Golden Flashes' Jaclyn Dutton, the MAC leader in goals, found the net both for both Kent State scores in a 10-minute span of the first half.
The Cardinals (5-4-2), who were one of four teams to open the MAC schedule with two wins last weekend, fell to 2-1 in conference play with the loss. Kent State (6-2-2) improved to 1-1-1 in the league. Ball State continues its road weekend Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at Ohio.
The loss for Ball State was just its second in the past seven games, and the Cardinals were shut out for only the second time this season.
"I thought our players showed some character and perseverance today despite some adversity and things not going our way," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "Certainly it wasn't the result we wanted, but those were two good teams out there today."
Dutton opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the 19th minute after Ball State was called for a foul in the box. She scored again in the 29th minute for her 10th of the season on an assist from teammate Stephanie Haugh for what proved to be the last goal of the game.
Kent State took its 2-0 lead into halftime and maintained that margin the rest of the way.
The teams combined for only 15 shots in the game and just eight on goal. Kent State held a slim, 8-7 lead in shots as it became the first team in the past 10 games to out-shoot the Cardinals despite getting just two shots off in the second half.
Michelle Blok and Jasmine Moses led Ball State with two shots each, while Dutton led all players in the game with four shots.
Kent State goalkeeper Stephanie Senn posted four saves in the game, while Ball State goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler had a pair of saves.
