Field Hockey Falls to Lafayette, 5-1

EASTON, Pa. - The Ball State field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to Lafayette Sunday, Aug. 26 at Rappolt Field to move to 1-1 for the season. Sophomore midfielder Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) scored her fourth goal of the season for the Cardinals.
"This weekend was what we needed," said head coach Beth Maddox. "The opportunity to gain confidence and also compete against top caliber teams is essential. The team fought well and we will be ready for next weekend."
The Leopards (1-0) got on the board early, scoring twice in the first five minutes of action. Widrick answered for the Cardinals in the 15th minute off a rebound from a penalty corner. The midfielder holds a .571 shot on goal percentage this season.
Lafayette put a shot in the back of the net in the 19th minute and the score would stay 3-1 for the remainder of the half. The Leopards scored in the 38th and 53rd minutes to take the victory.
Freshman Maddi Elliott (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) saw 35 minutes of action and made two saves and allowed three goals. Classmate Shelby Henley (Novi, Mich./Novi) played the second half and allowed two goals while making three saves. Lafayette held the advantage in shots, 13-5, shots on goal, 10-4, and penalty corners, 8-2.
The Cardinals are back in action next weekend, traveling to Louisville, Ky., to take on Davidson on Sunday, Sep. 2 and Louisville on Monday, Sep. 3.
