Field Hockey Opens MAC Play with 3-0 Shutout Victory

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team scored three goals en route to a 3-0 shutout victory against Miami (OH) Wednesday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field. The Cardinals picked up their first victory of the 2011 season and opened Mid-American Conference play with a bang, capitalizing on 3-of-7 shots on goal.
Ball State (1-6, 1-0) paced the contest, as junior midfielder Marisa Weachter (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) tallied the first goal of the day, tipped in at 7:48 mark to put the Cardinals on the board first. The goal marks a career first for the elementary education major. Senior defender Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) tallied the assist, her first on the season.
At 40:53 mark, senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) scored her second goal of the season with a shot from the top-left of the circle to put Ball State up 2-0. Freshman Leanne Goldblatt (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) recorded the assist.
Less than five minutes later, freshman Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) scored Ball state's third and final goal of the contest at 45:23 mark off a penalty corner, while freshman defender Laura Malinoski (Easthampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) recorded the assist.
Kuhn finished the contest with four shots, while Hermans tallied two and Weachter, Lulow, Goldblatt and freshman midfielder Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) recorded one shot apiece.
Freshman goalkeeper Haley Fusting (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) made three saves during 70 minutes of action.
Coming up on the Cardinals' calendar, the squad hosts MAC foe Central Michigan Saturday at noon from the BSU Turf Field. Ball State has tallied an all-time record of 44-55 (.444) at BSU Turf Field in Muncie, Ind. since the facility opened Sept. 12, 1998.
