
Field Hockey Loses 3-1 to Northwestern

MUNCIE, Ind. – Freshman Laura Malinoski (Easthampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) scored her first career goal, but the Ball State field hockey team fell to Northwestern, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field.
Northwestern (5-2) outshot Ball State (0-4), 30-18, and connected on 3-of-21 shots on goal. At 29:25 mark, Malinoski scored the Cardinals' lone goal past the Wildcats' goalkeeper Amanda Wirth.
After Northwestern opened the game with an early goal at 10:15 mark, the defender responded with a shot from the left post off of a penalty corner. Freshman midfielder Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) provided the assist.
The Wildcats added two goals in the second period to secure the 3-1 win versus the Cardinals, both off penalty corners.
Senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) recorded
eight shots in the game, while Hermans and freshman midfielder Leanne Goldblatt
(Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) tallied four and two shots, respectively.
Freshman goalkeeper Haley Fusting (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) finished with 10 saves in the cage, while Northwestern's Wirth and Maddy Carpenter combined for a total of seven saves in 70 minutes of action.
Next up for the Cardinals, the team heads to Ann Arbor, Mich. Friday for a pair of weekend contest versus No. 14 Boston University and No. 13 Michigan at the Phyllis Ocker Field Hockey Field.
Head coach Beth Maddox and the team enters Mid-American Conference play as the squad hosts Miami (OH) at the BSU Turf Field, Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. The Cardinals have tallied an all-time record of 43-55 (.439) at BSU Turf Field in Muncie, Ind. since the facility opened Sept. 12, 1998.
