Men's Hoops Overpowers Trinity Western, 114-71

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada - The Ball State men's basketball team continued its high-powered offensive attack as the Cardinals overpowered Trinity Western 114-71 at the Richmond Olympic Oval in the second game of the Cardinals' Canadian trip. All 11 Cardinals scored at least four points and five different players reached double figures in the victory.
Junior guard Jauwan Scaife (Muncie, Ind./Muncie, Central) led the Cardinals with 22 points on the strength of 8-of-13 shooting from the field, including five three-pointers. Scaife also dished out six assists while only committing one turnover. Sophomore forward Matt Kamieniecki (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) posted a double-double in the victory as he scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Chris Bond (Gary, Ind./Bowman Academy) continued to stuff the stat sheet as he finished with 18 points, five steals, four rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot. Freshman guard Zeke Chapman (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) turned in an impressive outing as he poured in 17 points and dished out five assists off the bench. Chapman connected on 5-of-6 from long range in the victory as the Cardinals hit 57.1 percent (12-of-21) three-pointers.
Ball State and Trinity Western battled back-and-forth for much of the first quarter with TWU holding a 19-16 lead with just over four minutes left in the opening quarter. The Spartans were led in the first quarter by Kyle Coston who scored 12 points in the opening frame on his way to 18 first half points. The Cardinals scored the final five points of the first quarter to take a 26-23 lead at the break as junior forward Jarrod Jones (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) capped the quarter with a drive down the lane.
The Cardinals came out of the break and broke the game open with a 23-1 run to take a 57-31 lead with 2:34 left in the half. Ball State used the three-point shot as Chapman and Scaife each hit three three-pointers in the run to propel the Cardinals into the lead for good.
Ball State connected on 53.7 percent (22-of-41) from the field in the first half and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from long range. Scaife led the way with 14 first half points while Bond added 12 points and senior Jarrod Jones (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) tallied 10 points in the half.
The Spartans were held to 37.8 percent (14-of-37) from the field and just 20.0 percent (2-of-10) from long range. Coston led Trinity Western with 18 of its 23 points in the first half as he hit 6-of-13 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers.
Ball State ended any doubt in the third quarter as it out-scored the Spartans 32-8 to take a commanding 91-46 lead at the end of three quarters. Scaife was the catalyst in the period as he scored eight points, including a pair of long range shots. Bond added six points while Jones chipped in five in the quarter, capped off by a thunderous and-one dunk over a TWU player.
The Cardinals finished the night shooting 52.1 percent (38-of-73) from the field and 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from long range. Ball State also was strong from the free throw line hit 81.3 percent (26-of-32) in the victory, led by Bond's 6-of-6 performance. The Cardinals also posted 28 assists on 38 field goals as four different players posted at least five helpers.
Jones rounded out the Cardinals in double figures as he posted 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. He also tallied three blocked shots and two steals in the all-around performance. Redshirt junior Zach Fields (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) added six points and six rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.
Trinity Western ended the night shooting 33.3 percent (25-of-75) from the field and 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from long range. The Cardinals forced the Spartans into 19 turnovers and turned those miscues into 29 points. Coston led TWU with 27 points but committed eight turnovers while Calvin Westbrook added 14 points.
The Cardinals continue their Canadian tour Saturday evening as they travel to Victoria, British Columbia to face the Victoria Select team. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. Ball State rounds out the trip with its third game in as many days as it travels to Vancouver Island University Sunday afternoon.
