Men's Golf Wins EY Invitational; Steger Wins Title

Ball State's men's golf team won its own Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club in Muncie, Ind., and senior Eric Steger posted his first career individual title with a 67-72-75=214.
Steger won the event by one stroke over teammate Tyler Merkel, a freshman who took medalist honors at the adidas Hoosier Invitational a week ago. Merkel managed a 69-73-73=215.
Ball State's team total of 354-372-378=1104 won the tournament by nine strokes over Bowling Green, which posted a 380-365-368=1113. The tournament title marked the 12th in 13 seasons by head coach Mike Fleck.
After Steger and Merkel, Alex Stinson tied for 10th with a 71-73-76=220. Joe Gasser tied for 20th with a 72-78-76=226. Tony Lazzara tied for 38th with a 76-76-78=230, while Brodie Williams tied for 50th with a 75-78-81=234.
Ball State played a second team in the event, which tied for seventh with a 372-388-388=1144.
TJ Carpenter led the second team and tied for eighth overall with a 75-70-74=219. Zac Treash tied for 20th with a 75-78-73=226. Wes Phelps tied for 26th with a 68-81-78=227. Connor O'Neal managed a 73-78-84=235, while Anthony Novak scored an 81-79-77=237.
Joining Ball State's two teams in the 15-team field were Austin Peay, Bowling Green, Butler, Cleveland State, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Marshall, Northern Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville, Ohio, Valparaiso and Wright State.
The Cardinals will return to action Saturday and Sunday at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio.
