March 20, 2011 | Baseball
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Ball State baseball team dropped a 4-1 contest on the road Saturday afternoon against Belmont at Shelby Park. The Cardinals were held to just two hits in the loss by three Belmont pitchers to drop the second game of the three-game series.
Belmont (10-10) got off to an early lead against senior left-hander Derek Grabner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Lincoln Trail) in the bottom of the second inning. Grabner got the first two batters out before Greg Brody connected on a solo home run over the left field wall.
The Bruins added on to their lead in the bottom of the third inning as they plated three runs to take a 4-0 lead. Belmont posted three hits in the inning and took advantage of a Grabner wild pitch to take the four-run lead.
Ball State answered with a run of its own in the top of the fourth inning to narrow the deficit to 4-1. Senior shortstop T.J. Baumet (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) led off the inning with a single and quickly stole two bases to move into scoring position. Junior second baseman Mitch Widau (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) plated Baumet as he lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to round out the scoring.
Grabner (0-2) picked up the loss as he finished the day allowing seven hits over 6.0 innings, while striking out six. Junior right-hander Justin Warrington (Granville, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) and freshman left-hander Devin Wilburn (Selma, Ind./Wapahani) each added a scoreless inning of relief for the Cardinals.
Belmont right-hander Nate Woods improved to 2-3 on the season as he worked 7.0 strong innings of one-run baseball as he limited the Cardinals to two hits. Relievers Garrett Fanchier and Jon Ivie combined to work the final two scoreless innings with Ivie posting his fifth save of the season.
Ball State will close out the three game series Sunday afternoon at 1 P.M. (CT) with senior right-hander Morgan Coombs (West Terre Haute, Ind./Lincoln Trail) set to take the hill.
