Baseball Drops Series Finale At Southeast Missouri State
February 27, 2011 | Baseball
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - - Despite a 5-for-5 effort at the plate from junior Cody Elliott (Florence, Ky./Beechwood H.S.), the Ball State (1-5) baseball team suffered a 22-8 setback in the rubber game of a three-game series at Southeast Missouri State's (5-2) Capaha Field Sunday afternoon.
The game was a back-and-forth battle early, as BSU rallied from three runs down to take a 4-3 edge in the top of the third. SEMO responded with three runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth, and never let off the gas from there.
Elliot, who also pitched the first 1.2 innings of the game allowing three runs on one hit and three walks, opened his day at the plate with a double in the first, followed by back-to-back triples. He added two singles late in the game to finish a home run shy of the cycle. Elliot scored three of BSU's eight runs, while driving in a pair.
Sophomore Blake Beemer (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont H.S.) also turned in a solid performance at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Freshman Devin Wilburn (0-1) suffered the loss for the Cardinals, giving up four runs and three hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Michael Adamson, Casey Jones and Tim Rupp each collected three hits for the RedHawks, while Jesse Tierney collecting a game-high six RBI, including a grand slam in the seventh inning.
Nick Thomas (1-0) picked up the win for Southeast Missouri State, allowing just four hits and two runs in three innings of work.
The RedHawks tallied the first marker of the game in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-out RBI single from Jones which plated Nick Harris who reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
SEMO upped its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second when a pair of walked batters came around to score. Louie Haseltine scored the first run when he led off the inning with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a pass ball and came around to score on a Blake Slattery groundout to second. Rupp scored the second run after a two-out walk, a stolen base and a RBI single from Kenton Parmley.
The Cardinals retaliated in the top of the third, posting a four-spot in the inning. Wes Winkle (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown H.S.) led off the frame being hit by a pitch, then claimed his third stolen base of the series before T.J. Baumet (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg H.S.) drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Elliott followed with a two-run triple and came around to score on a Beemer single to shortstop.
Beemer reached second on a throwing error by the SEMO shortstop on his single, advanced to third on a Stephen Claypool (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child H.S.) groundout to second and scored on a T.J. Weir (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo H.S.) groundout down the first base line.
The Cardinals' lead was short-lived, however, as a three-run home run from Adamson allowed Southeast Missouri State to pull back ahead 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth.
Ball State cut the lead in half, to 6-5, in the top of the fifth thanks to Elliot's second triple of the contest which was followed by an RBI double from Beemer.
SEMO responded to the BSU threat with a six-run fifth inning, taking command of the game at 12-5. A bases loaded one-out walk from Tierney started the scoring and was followed by a two-run single from Rupp. Tierney scored on a Parmley sacrifice fly, while Rupp stole second and came around to score on an Michael Adamson single through the right side. Another single and a walk loaded the bases once again, while a walk to Trenton Moses brought home the final run of the inning.
Kirby Campbell (Muncie, Ind./Cowan H.S.) led off the top of the sixth with a double for BSU, and came around to score three batters later on a sacrifice fly from Winkle, moving the score to 12-6.
The RedHawks got the run back in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI groundout from Parmley which allowed Slattery to score from third and made the score 13-6.
A grand slam from Southeast Missouri State's Tierney pushed the score to 17-6 in the bottom of the seventh.
In the top of the eighth, BSU redshirt freshman Billy Wellman (Portland, Ind./Jay County H.S.) recorded his first career hit with a two-out single up the middle.
SEMO tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the eighth, all with two outs, thanks to a two-RBI double from Haseltine, a bases loaded RBI walk from Tierney and a two-run single from Rupp, giving the hosts a 20-6 edge.
Ball State scored the final two runs of the game in the top of the ninth off a two-run RBI single from Weir. Elliot and Tim Issler (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier H.S.), who doubled down the left field line in a pinch hit appearance, scored on the play.
The Ball State baseball team returns to action Friday, when it battles No. 17 Coastal Carolina in the first of four games at the Coastal Carolina Tournament.Team Stats
