
Field Hockey Finishes Strong Versus Missouri State

MUNCIE, Ind. - Freshman forward Kaitlin Thompson (San Carlos, Calif./St. Francis) scored her first career goal for the Cardinals as the Ball State field hockey team defeated Mid-American Conference foe Missouri State, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field.
The Cardinals outshot the Bears, 19-12, recorded a 17-7 advantage on penalty corners and capitalized on 3-of-13 shots on goal.
Ball State jumped out to an early lead at 3:34 mark as senior defender Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) scored her second goal of the season off a Cardinal penalty corner past Missouri State's netminder Andrea Bain. Freshman midfielder Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) provided the assist.
The Bears tallied the equalizer off a rebound at 9:11 mark as Reinn Stoute posted a shot past the Cardinals' senior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Steven, Pa./Cocalico).
Ball State followed that performance with a second goal at 14:56 mark as freshman defender Laura Malinoski (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) scored off a penalty stroke, her third goal of the season. Hermans once again provided the assist for BSU, her sixth career assist.
The game would not see another goal until the second period at 45:21 mark when Missouri State responded with a goal by Casey Bayliss off a Bears penalty corner.
Then, Thompson buried a shot at 63:19 mark off a deflection to help secure the win for the Cardinals. Senior defender Katie Norris (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) tallied the assist for Ball State.
Hermans recorded nine shots during the contest, while senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) posted three and Lulow, freshman midfielder Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) and Malinoski tallied two shots each.
Widrick also recorded a defensive save on the day, while Mitchell finished with six saves during 70 minutes of action in the cage.
The squad returns to action Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. as Ball State heads to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. for a contest versus Central Michigan
