MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team recorded its second-straight win of the young season with a 4-0 shutout victory of the St. Louis Billikens, Sunday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field.
The win completes Ball State's home-opening weekend, which also included the Cardinals' shutout of the visiting Roberts Morris Colonials (5-0) on Friday. Today, the Cardinals outshot the Billikens an astonishing 27-6 and connected on 4-for-16 shots on goal.
"Overall, it was a good opening weekend at home, it was nice to get two shutouts," head coach Beth Maddox said. "When we play together as a unit, good things happen. It was a great crowd out here today and there was great support by other athletes. I think it makes the team feel very good."
At 30:47 junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) opened up scoring for the Cardinals off of a penalty corner for her fifth goal of the season. Senior forward Kaitlan Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) and junior midfield Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) provided the double assist.
Early in the second period, at 37:32 mark, senior Hannah Jones (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual) buried a shot from the top of the circle past the Billikens' netminder Alex LaBarge. Teammates Lulow and junior midfield Brandi Mixell (Fort Littleton, Pa./Frostburg State) provided the double assist on the goal, Jones' second of the season.
At 67:34, Kuhn tallied her second goal of the day, and sixth of the season, on a rebound from LaBarge. Ball State quickly resumed its hot-shooting at 69:08 when Mitchell struck just in front of the Billikens' cage for her first goal of the season. Kuhn recorded the assist for the Cardinals' final point on the board.
Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) and sophomore netminder Morgan Hammer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) split time in the cage. The duo combined for a total of five saves, while LaBarge finished with 12 in 70 minutes of action.
Coming up on the Cardinals' calendar, the squad travels to play Northwestern and Iowa in a two-game series in the Big 10 Conference, starting Friday, Sept. 17 in Evanston, Ill. at 3 p.m. Friday's game marks the 24th time Ball State and Northwestern have met. The Wildcats own a 14-7-2 all-time record against the Cardinals. The teams last met Sept. 3, 2007 when Northwestern defeated Ball State, 5-2.
The contest versus Iowa Saturday, Sept. 18 marks the 21st meeting between the two teams, as the Hawkeyes own an 18-2 series advantage against the Cardinals. Northwestern finished the 2009 season with a 12-8 record (1-5 Big 10), while Iowa went 9-10 (3-3 Big 10).
