Field Hockey Falls to Northwestern, 6-2

EVANSTON, Ill. - Juniors Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy) and Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) scored one goal apiece, however the Ball State field hockey team fell to Northwestern, 6-2, Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
The contest today versus the Wildcats marks the beginning of a four-game road swing as the Cardinals continue play Saturday against the Iowa Hawkeyes at 1 p.m. CT in Iowa City, Iowa at Grant Field. Northwestern outshot Ball State, 24-5, and connected on 6-of-18 shots on goal.
At 22:13, Kuhn scored the Cardinals' first goal of the game and her seventh on the season. After the Wildcats opened the game with two early goals, the communications studies major responded with a backhand shot off of a penalty corner. Maguire and junior midfield Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) provided the double assist.
Early in the second period at 40:05 mark, Maguire tallied her first goal of the season after Lulow dribbled it down the right side of the circle and passed it across the Wildcats' netminder Amanda Wirth.
Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Hammer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) finished with 11 saves during 70 minutes in the cage, while Northwestern's Katie Lynch and Wirth combined for a total of three saves in 70 minutes of action.
Next up for the Cardinals, the team looks to complete a four-game road swing and enter Mid-American Conference competition with contests against league foes Kent State and Ohio. On Saturday, Sept. 25, the Cardinals travel to Kent, Ohio to play the Golden Flashes in a game at 1 p.m. at Murphy-Mellis Field. On Sunday, Sept. 26, Ball State will play the Ohio Bobcats at 1 p.m. in Athens, Ohio at Pruitt Field.
