ATHENS, Ohio - The Ball State field hockey team fell to Mid-American Conference foe Ohio, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at Pruitt Field. The Bobcats outshot the Cardinals, 21-2, and connected on 7-of-17 shots on goal.
Ohio applied strong offensive pressure from the opening minutes, as Cathryn Altdoerffer sunk a shot at 2:43 mark to open play. The squad would increase its lead to 5-0 before halftime.
Early in the second period at 40:15 mark, a penalty corner provided a scoring opportunity for the Bobcats. Less than a minute later, Brittany Zorn scored Ohio's seventh and final of the game.
Senior forward Ellen Vonderbrink (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) and junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) each tallied one shot during the contest, while junior midfielder Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) finished with a defensive save.
Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Hammer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) recorded nine saves in 70 minutes of action, while the Bobcats' Courtney Seiders finished with one.
The Cardinals return to the BSU Turf field next weekend as Ball State hosts MAC foes Miami and Missouri State. Friday, Oct. 1, the team play the Redhawks in a contest slated for 3 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 2, the Cardinals will play the Bears at 1 p.m.
Friday's game marks the 59th time Ball State and Miami have met. The Cardinals own a 43-15 all-time record against the Redhawks. The contest versus Missouri State Saturday marks the 19th meeting between the two teams, as the Cardinals own a 13-5 series advantage against the Bears. Miami finished the 2009 season with a 13-10 record (7-3 MAC), while Missouri State went 4-16 (1-9 MAC).
