Field Hockey Falls to No. 17 Kent State

KENT, Ohio - Senior back Elizabeth Blaum (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and junior forward Brittany Hammer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) each scored their first goal of the season, however the Ball State field hockey team fell to Mid-American Conference foe Kent State, 8-2, Saturday afternoon at Murphy-Mellis Field.
In the opening game of MAC competition for the two squads, the Golden Flashes outshot the Cardinals, 27-9, and connected on 8-of-17 shots on goal. Kent State's Nicole Leach opened up scoring for the game at 18:26 mark, starting a 6-0 run.
Ball State responded at 54:37 when Blaum buried a shot from the right side and junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) provided the assist. Just over ten minutes later, Hammer came in from the left side and scored past Kent State's netminder, Caroline Suitch. Senior forward Ellen Vonderbrink (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) provided the assist.
Kuhn also recorded four shots in the game while junior midfielder CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) added one shot. Morgan Hammer tallied nine saves in the cage, while Suitch finished with four in 70 minutes of action.
The Cardinals return to the BSU Turf field next weekend as Ball State hosts MAC foes Miami and Missouri State. Friday, Oct. 1, the Cardinals play the Redhawks in a contest slated for 3 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 2, the Cardinals will play the Bears at 1 p.m.
Friday's game marks the 59th time Ball State and Miami have met. The Cardinals own a 43-15 all-time record against the Redhawks. The contest versus Missouri State Saturday marks the 19th meeting between the two teams, as the Cardinals own a 13-5 series advantage against the Bears. Miami finished the 2009 season with a 13-10 record (7-3 MAC), while Missouri State went 4-16 (1-9 MAC).
