Field Hockey Travels to Northwestern, Iowa

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Ball State field hockey team begins a four-game road swing this weekend, starting with contests against Northwestern and Iowa. Friday, the Cardinals travel to Evanston, Ill. to clash with the Wildcats in a game slated for 3 p.m. CT at Lakeside Field. Saturday, Ball State will play Iowa at 1 p.m. CT in Iowa City, Iowa at Grant Field.
LAST TIME OUT: In Ball State's home opening weekend, the squad defeated Robert Morris and St. Louis at the BSU Turf Field. The Cardinals shutout both the Colonials and Billikens by scores of 5-0 and 4-0, respectively. Against Robert Morris, head coach Beth Maddox picked up her first career home victory as the Cardinals outshot the visiting Colonials, 20-4. Junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) and Brandi Mixell (Fort Littleton, Pa./Frostburg) each recorded two goals, in addition to junior midfielder Gretchen Lulow's (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) tally at 37:52, to complete the scoring for the contest.
Versus St. Louis, in the second-straight win of Ball State's young season, the Cardinals outshot the Billikens, 27-6, and connected on 4-for-16 shots on goal. Kuhn added two goals, while seniors Hannah Jones (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual) and Kaitlan Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) added one apiece.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN: Friday's game marks the 24th time Ball State and Northwestern have met. The Wildcats own a 14-7-2 all-time record against the Cardinals. The teams last met Sept. 3, 2007 when Northwestern defeated Ball State, 5-2. This season, Chelsea Armstrong, Nikki Parsley, Zoe Almquist and Regan Mooney lead the Wildcats' charge, combining for 54 points as a group on the young season. Armstrong, a sophomore from Perth, Australia, has accounted for nearly a third of Northwestern's goals since the beginning of the year (9-of-28). The Wildcats received 36 votes in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll on Tuesday.
SCOUTING IOWA: The contest against Iowa Saturday marks the 21st meeting between the two teams, as the Hawkeyes own an 18-2 series advantage against the Cardinals. Iowa went 9-10 (3-3 Big 10) in 2009. Since the beginning of the season, Iowa owns a 1-1 home record after falling to Miami, 5-1 and topping Brown, 5-0. Sophomore defender Jessica Barnett leads the Hawkeyes with 23 shots, eight points and four goals. At Grant Field, Iowa owns an overall record of 126-38 and a league record of 57-19. The Hawkeyes have gone undefeated on their home field in six separate seasons, including a 40-game home winning streak. The Hawkeyes received five votes in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll on Tuesday.
KUHN CAPATURES MAC HONOR: Kuhn earned Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors (Sept. 9) for her performance against Robert Morris and St. Louis. The communications studies major tallied the honor for the second time in her career.
Friday versus Robert Morris, Kuhn released from the pack for a breakaway goal at 17:03 mark against the Colonials' goaltender Stephanie Seeley. She then tallied her second goal of the game, and fourth of the season, at 48:56 mark. Sunday versus St. Louis, Kuhn opened up the scoring for Ball State at 30:47 off of a penalty corner for her fifth goal of the season. At 67:34, she tallied her second goal of the day, and sixth of the season, on a rebound from the Billikens' netminder Alex LaBarge.
CARDINALS SNAG VOTES: The Ball State field hockey team received six votes in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, announced Tuesday, Sept. 7 by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. On Tuesday, MAC foes Miami and Kent State received 105 and 76 votes, respectively.
UPPERCLASSMEN LEADING THE PACK: The squad is led by 15 upperclassmen who have scored all 39 points so far this season. Kuhn paces the Cardinals with six goals and two assists, including four goals versus Robert Morris and St. Louis.
