Field Hockey Opens Season With Victory Versus Longwood
August 27, 2010 | Field Hockey
Farmville, Va. – Ball State field hockey head coach Beth Maddox earned her first career win Friday afternoon when the Cardinals defeated the Longwood Lancers, 3-2, in a topsy-turvy overtime win at the Athletics Complex.
“It was a team effort today, our upperclassmen really stepped up," Maddox said. “Our captains were great leaders and with the support of the team we came away with the win.”
Ball State (1-0) defeated Longwood (0-1), connecting on eight-of-nine shots on goal. Junior CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) opened the Cardinals' offense early as the forward struck from just inside the circle at 6:59. Longwood's Lauren Sullivan tipped in the equalizer at 26:26, in front of sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Hammer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area).
The final minutes before halftime saw senior forward Hannah Jones (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual) slip in a saved and returned shot from junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) for a goal at 29:26.
However, Longwood fought back early in the second half, as Kimberly Sullivan netted the Lancers' second and final goal of the day. It was not until overtime, at 81:01 mark, when Kuhn's breakaway goal bested goalkeeper Kaye Goulding and secured the win for the Cardinals.
Kuhn, a communication studies major, also recorded four shots in the game, while Hermes, Jones, senior defender Elizabeth Blaum (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and juniors Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) and Brandi Mixell (Fort Littleton, Pa./Frostburg State) added one each.
Hammer made six saves in 81:01 minutes of action, while Longwood's Goulden finished with three in the cage.
Ball State will face Appalachian State at 1 p.m. Sunday from the Athletics Complex.
Maddox and the team opens the home portion of the 2010 season Friday, Sept. 3 at the BSU Turf Field against Robert Morris at 3 p.m. The Cardinals have tallied an all-time record of 43-54 (.443) at BSU Turf Field in Muncie, Ind. since the facility opened Sept. 12, 1998.
