December 04, 2010 | Women's Swimming and Diving
YPSILANTI, Mich. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team concluded its record-setting weekend with a third-place finish among 12 teams at the EMU Invitational hosted by Eastern Michigan at the Jones Natatorium. On the second day of competition, the Cardinals posted four more school records, bringing their weekend total to six.
Big Ten power Michigan won the two-day meet with 865 points, followed by host Eastern Michigan (694.5), Ball State (649.5), Bowling Green (604), Ashland (335), Michigan State (293), Toledo (208), Findlay (64), Oakland (59), IUPUI (57), Wayne State (28) and Waterloo (6).
In addition to the record-setting efforts, the Cardinals finished the second day of the meet with 24 top 10 efforts, including one event victory.
Freshman Bridgette Ruehl completed her takeover of the Ball State breaststroke records, with a school-record time of 1:04.12 in 100 breaststroke to take home fifth place at the meet. Friday, Ruehl turned in a BSU-record swim of 2:17.12 in the 200 breaststroke.
Fellow freshman Mallory Miles turned in the Cardinals second record-breaking performance of the day, with a program-best time of 56.64 to win the 100 backstroke. In the opening day of competition, Miles turned in a school-record time of 2:03.18 in the 200 backstroke.
Miles was not alone with her solid performance in the 100 backstroke Saturday, as freshman Jackie Iglesias placed third in the event with the second-best individual time in program history at 57.03. Previous Ball State school record holder junior Nicole Saulters placed fourth with a time of 57.20, .08 seconds behind her career-best and then-school-record time of 57.12 set at the 2009 MAC Championships.
However, Saulters would keep her named etched in the BSU record book with a BSU school-record 50 backstroke split of 26.53 in the 200 medley relay.
BSU's fourth record-breaking performance came in the final event of Saturday's morning session, when sophomore Jillian Bischoff, freshman Haley Richter, freshman Emily Wisolek and senior Katie Bylsma combined for a school-record swim of 7:34.36 in the 800 freestyle relay. The effort knocked almost a second off the previous school record of 7:35.05 set at the 2008 MAC Championships.
In addition to helping lead the 800 freestyle relay to a school-record time, Wisolek tallied the third-best individual time in program history in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 1:52.02 to take fourth place at the meet.
Richter also turned in a pair of top five efforts, placing fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.91) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:08.25).
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action Dec. 11, when it closes the 2010 portion of its 2010-11 schedule with a 2 p.m. swim at Michigan State, which is the alma mater of BSU head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill.
