December 10, 2010 | Women's Swimming and Diving
EAST LANSING, Mich. - - Despite wins in five events, the Ball State women's swimming & diving team suffered its first dual meet setback of the season with a 167-125 loss at Michigan State's McCaffree Pool Saturday afternoon.
Swimming against the alma mater of Ball State head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill, the Cardinals posted their first of five event wins in 200 freestyle, when freshman Emily Wisolek (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge H.S.) posted a time of 1:56.00.
Six events later, freshman Haley Richter (Roanoke, Ind./Columbia City H.S.) collected her first of three event wins on the day, claiming top billing in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.16.
Four events later, Richter racked up her second first-place performance of the meet with a time of 56.81 in the 100 butterfly. She followed with a first-place swim of 2:10.83 in the 200 IM.
The Cardinals, who fall to 3-1 in dual competition with the loss, also picked up a win in the 400 freestyle relay, as junior Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.), sophomore Jillian Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind./Hamilton Heights H.S.), Wisolek and senior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) combined for a time of 3:34.93.
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action Sunday, Jan. 2, when it travels to Ft. Pierce, Fla., for the Treasure Coast Invitational.
MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Head Coach Laura Seibold-Caudill will be in familiar territory this weekend as the Ball State women's swimming and diving team travels to Michigan State Saturday for a 2 p.m. dual meet versus the Spartans.
A 1976 Michigan State graduate, Seibold-Caudill was a three-time national finalist in 1-meter and 3-meter diving for the Spartans. She was honored as an All-American for her efforts in 1973, 1974 and 1975.
Seibold-Caudill, who won the East-West Diving Championships while at MSU, was invited to participate in the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team Diving Trials. An eight-time U.S. Diving National Qualifier from 1972-76, she also competed in the U.S. Pan American Team Trials and the U.S. World Game Trials in 1975.
This weekend, however, Seibold-Caudill will be looking to keep the Cardinals' undefeated record intact at the MaCaffree Pool. BSU enters the meet with a 3-0 (1-0 MAC) record and a lot of momentum after breaking six school records at last weekend's EMU Invitational.
The Cardinals placed third overall at last weekend's two-day meet, three spots ahead of Michigan State's sixth-place finish.
Freshman Bridgette Ruehl set two records at the EMU Invite, one in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.12) and one in the 100 backstroke (2:17.12).
Another freshman breaking through record book last weekend was Mallory Miles. Miles swam the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.54, which beat the former school record of 57.20, set last season by fellow swimmer Nicole Saulters at the MAC Campionships. Miles also set the school-record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.18.
Jackie Iglesias also finds herself in the record books for Ball State after the EMU Invite, by setting the second best time for the program in the 100 backstroke at 57.02.
Saulters keeps her name in the record books by breaking the school record for fastest 50 backstroke spilt with a time of 26.53 in the 200 medley relay.
The last record breaking performance for Ball State was in the 800 freestyle relay. Sophomore Jillian Bischoff, freshman Haley Richter, freshman Emily Wisolek and senior Katie Byslma completed the relay with a time of 7:34.36, knocking off the previous record of 7:35.05 which was set at the 2008 MAC Championships.
