A two-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year (1989-90 & 2003-04), Laura Seibold-Caudill embarks on her 33rd and final season as head coach of the women’s swimming & diving team at Ball State. From the 2004-05 season through the 2008-09 season, she was also the co-head coach of the men’s swimming & diving team.
In her 32 previous seasons, Seibold-Caudill boasts a combined record of 270-176-3 (.605), including an 87-112-1 (.438) Mid-American Conference mark, with both programs. She has helped guide the Ball State women’s squad to third-place finishes at the league championship meet four times, while helping the men’s program to a top three finish in her first season as co-head coach of the program in 2004-05.
Over her career, Seibold-Caudill has coached her student-athletes to MAC individual championships a total of 34 times, while helping guide her relay teams to four titles. Her student-athletes have earned First Team All-MAC honors 28 times, while collecting Second Team All-MAC accolades on 17 occasions.
She has also coached her athletes to two All-America honors, four MAC Diver of Year awards, three MAC Outstanding Senior awards and two MAC Swimmer of the Year honors. In addition, she has coached two individual NCAA National Championships qualifiers, two U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials participants and five International Olympic Team Trial participants.
The Cardinals’ latest MAC individual champion came in 2005-06 when the MAC Outstanding Senior award winner Kurtis Leer swept the freestyle sprint events, winning the 50, 100 and 200 titles. Leer, who is BSU’s record holder in both the 100 and 200 freestyle, finished his career as a six-time MAC champion, also winning all three events his junior year (2004-05).
On the women’s side, Seibold-Caudill helped guide Sarah Welter to the 100 backstroke title at the 2004-05 MAC Championships. Welter also swam the first leg of the 200 Medley Relay squad which captured the event title the same year with a school-record clocking of 1:45.04. Joining Welter in the relay were Tara Zimmer, Erin Johnson and Karla Bailey.
Seibold-Caudill captured the 2003-04 MAC Swimming Coach of the Year award after guiding her squad to an 11-5 dual meet record and a fourth-place finish at the MAC Championships.
A former collegiate diver, Seibold-Caudill helped Beth Clarke capture diving titles on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards during the 1997-98 season, which earned Clarke MAC Diver of the Year accolades. Clarke picked up the award again in 2000-01 after capturing the MAC title for a second time on the 1-meter board. Clarke also tallied three NCAA National Championship appearances in 1998, 2000 and 2001.
