December 13, 2010 | Men's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State junior forward Jarrod Jones (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning. Jones led the Cardinals to back-to-back road victories this week with wins over Eastern Illinois and Big East foe DePaul.
Jones earns the fifth MAC West weekly honor of his career and the first of the 2010-11 season. He posted back-to-back double-doubles in the victories, averaging 18.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. He scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds at Eastern Illinois to lead the Cardinals to a 58-51 victory. He connected on 9-of-15 from the field at EIU and continued his domination of the Panthers with his third career double-double in three career games.
Jones followed that performance with an impressive 17-point, 12 rebound effort against DePaul. The victory marked the first for the Cardinals over a Big East team since March 16, 1989 when Ball State downed Pittsburgh in the NCAA Tournament (68-64). He connected on 7-of-15 from the field and scored nine of his points down the stretch in the second half to force overtime.
Jones leads the Cardinals in scoring at 14.6 points per game and is second in the MAC on the glass at 9.4 rebounds per game. He has tallied five double-doubles through the first eight games this season and has 15 double dips in his career. He is currently tied with Eastern Michigan's Brandon Bowdry for the MAC lead in double-doubles (five) this season.
Jones and the Cardinals will be off this week for final exams. Ball State returns to action December 21 as it hosts the College of Mount St. Joseph at 7 p.m.
