Field Hockey Earns Double OT Victory vs. Indiana

MUNCIE, Ind. - Senior forward Ellen Vonderbrink (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) scored the game-winning goal as the Ball State field hockey team defeated non-conference opponent Indiana, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at BSU Turf Field in double overtime. The Hoosiers outshot the Cardinals, 19-13, and tallied a 17-6 advantage on penalty corners.
"We are extremely proud of our team for bouncing back after a tough game on Friday," head coach Beth Maddox said. "We battled through some injuries today and everyone stepped up as we played together for the full game. That was our plan and we executed it well."
Indiana's Morgan Fleetwood scored the first goal at 44:48 mark in the second period off a penalty corner, her fourth of the season. Kristy McFadden and Kelsey Kiper provided the double-assist.
Ball State junior forward Kristen Falk (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) tallied the unassisted equalizer, her second on the season, at 60:05 mark from five yards out in front of Indiana's goalkeeper Becky Pany. The end of the second period featured a short lightening delay as the tie pushed the contest into overtime.
At 88:50 mark in double overtime, Vonderbrink recorded the Cardinals' game-winning goal off a penalty corner, her first on the season. Junior midfielder Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) provided the assist.
Junior midfielders Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy) both finished the contest with two shots, while Falk and Lulow tallied three shots apiece. Seniors Morgan Cloutier (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and Maura Sawicki (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) completed the contest with a shot apiece. Sawicki, an elementary education major also recorded a defensive save, her 11th on the season.
Ball State junior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) tallied nine saves in the cage, while Pany recorded seven saves in 88:50 minutes of action.
Ball State travels to play Ohio State Wednesday at 3 p.m. and Miami Friday at 1 p.m. before returning to the BSU Turf Field Sunday to host Central Michigan in a contest scheduled for 1 p.m.
Against the Chippewas, Vonderbrink, Cloutier and Sawicki join fellow seniors Elizabeth Blaum (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), Hannah Jones (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual) and Kaitlan Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) in their last home game at the BSU Turf Field as the team celebrates Senior Day.
